  In forma di libro, contiene tre Cd e
un DVD, come dire 85 canzoni e 18 video, ed è completato da un comic book di 52 pagine e da un paio di occhialini per
la visione tridimensionale (per la visione di “Tunes from the crypt”, una delle storie a fumetti inclusa nel
book). Il concetto del “desiderio di possesso” è basilare, per dare un senso a questa recensione: ci
torneremo sopra più avanti.
  85 canzoni, dicevo, selezionate con la collaborazione di Johnny Ramone, che
spaziano per vent’anni di attività discografica, dalla prima canzone del primo disco (“Blitzkrieg
bop”) a “R.A.M.O.N.E.S.”, il pezzo scritto per la band da Lemmy dei Motorhead. Chi ha già altri
dischi della band, persino chi ha già soltanto una buona raccolta (per esempio “Ramones Anthology”,
uscita nel 1999 per la stessa Rhino, 58 canzoni in due Cd e un bel libretto con foto e testi), non ha bisogno di questo
cofanetto per capire “meglio” l’estetica musicale dei Ramones: la cui cifra espressiva ha la
caratteristica (il pregio?) di non aver subito variazioni significative nel corso del tempo. Il Ramones sound non si
è evoluto: semmai, di quando in quando, ha sperimentato la propria flessibilità, accettando trattamenti esterni
(la produzione di Phil Spector) o rileggendo brani altrui (“I don’t wanna grow up” di Tom Waits, da
noi tradotta da Enrico Ruggeri per Luigi Schiavone col titolo “Non voglio crescere più”, o
“Substitute” degli Who, o - forse l’unica rarità vera e propria del cofanetto - il tema di
“Spider-man”, che se non sbaglio prima d’ora era comparso solo su una compilation di temi di cartoni
animati), ma senza venir meno alla propria vocazione originaria. In proposito, interessante la tesi di Stephen M.
Deusner: “I Ramones sono stati gli anti-Beatles: hanno opposto resistenza alla crescita musicale e alla
maturazione”.
  Il fatto è che il box “Weird tales of the Ramones” è davvero un bellissimo
oggetto: da avere, da possedere, da tenere in libreria, da esibire con orgoglio agli amici, da conservare con cura negli
anni, da riprendere in mano qualche domenica pomeriggio per riascoltare i dischi e risfogliare il comic book.
  
  
  Weird Tales of the Ramones is a box set compilation by American punk band the Ramones. It was released on
August 16, 2005. There are 85 songs on 3 CDs, plus a DVD containing the feature "Lifestyles of the Ramones", a
documentary featuring several of their music videos up to 1990 interspaced by interview clips with the band and figures
in pop culture, plus the music videos released by the band (including an MTV-banned version of "Substitute") after the
release of the main feature on the DVD. The set was compiled by Johnny Ramone and released by Rhino Records.
  
  The boxset also contains a special oversize comic book, focusing on the legend of the band, written and illustrated
by multiple contributors, a 3D pair of glasses and a postcard to dedicate to Joey, Johnny and Dee Dee.
